Nguti is known in its native name as BEBUM. It is the headquarter of the Nguti Sub-division which comprises of 54 villages. The Nguti Sub-division is in Kupe-Muanenguba Division of the South West Region of Cameroon.
Nguti is a cosmopolitan town which harbours persons from various parts of Cameroon. It is situated about 92 km from Kumba and along the Kumba-Mamfe Road.
The founder of BEBUM (present day Nguti) was one T’Eyohmbugheh a.k.a. PA EYONG MBUGEH who in the course of his hunting expedition landed at a place which had sufficient water sources such as streams and rivers, as well fertile soil for farming. He then went back home to spread the news and the entire community unanimously agreed to migrate from the hinterlands to the current location of Nguti.
Following migration history, natives of NGUTI are the ‘MBO’s’ who left the hinterlands to settle where they presently reside. The people of NGUTI share much as far as culture and dialect are concerned with their fellow Mbo brethren on the other side of the MUNGO River, precisely Melong, Nkongsamba, Loum and other Mbo villages in the Littoral Region as well as SANTCHOU in the West Region.
The native language (dialect) of the Nguti people is the “Nghen” which has several similarities with those spoken by the Bakossi’s and the Bassossi’s.
Social amenities in Nguti include a District Hospital, a health centre and The Saint John of God Hospital which belongs to the Catholic Mission. The latter had once been a referral hospital in Cameroon as far as Orthopaedic surgeries were concerned.
In Education, Nguti has both a Government Bilingual High School (G.B.H.S) as well as a Government Technical College (G.T.C).
Prior to the start of the current sociopolitical crisis plaguing the North West and the South West Regiins, the population had been enjoying good potable/pipe-borne water managed by the Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation, CAMWATER (formerly SNEC). However, with onset of the crisis, the water systems were almost damaged due to lack of maintenance but for the timely intervention of the Nguti Youths Global Association with great support from ELATI BEBUM (the umbrella developmental Association of Nguti) which have made enormous efforts to ensure that the population has constant flow of potable water.
The population of Nguti is in urgent need of permanent electricity supply, given that its location is very economically strategic and favourable to all kinds of genuine businesses. The lack of permanent electricity has however greatly hampered this sector.
Thus, the key mission of the Nguti Youths Global Association is basically developmental. The Association brings together young boys and girls as well as well-wishers and sympathizers of Nguti under one thinking cap so that they can invest back home and develop their community.
Through its dynamic Exco under the leadership of Mr. NJANG EKANGAKI, the association is working to ensure that the local population back home do not lack basic social amenities like potable water and to also encourage the education of youngsters in the community. This is being done with the help of ELATI BEBUM which is the community’s umbrella developmental association.
The association with the help of ELATI BEBUM equally seeks to promote and preserve the rich and enviable culture and tradition of the Nguti people. Much of this culture will be discovered by the Limbe people on July 30th, 2022.
